Welcome to Project Muscovy
Understanding, Appreciating, and Protecting Muscovy Ducks
Muscovy ducks are some of the world's most misunderstood and yet most loving waterfowl. With their gentle nature, unique history, and deep connection to humans, these incredible birds deserve admiration, not persecution. Here at Project Muscovy, we aim to provide accurate, compassionate, and science-backed information about Muscovies to help change how they are perceived and treated.
Educate. Advocate. Celebrate.
Our mission is built on three pillars: Education, Advocacy, and Celebration.
Educate – We strive to share the truth about Muscovy ducks, dispelling myths and spreading awareness about their intelligence, ecological benefits, and loving nature.
Advocate – We stand against the mistreatment of Muscovies, pushing for humane treatment and policy changes that protect them.
Celebrate – Muscovy ducks bring joy to so many lives, and we believe in highlighting their beauty, resilience, and the special connections they form with people.

Who Are Muscovy Ducks?
Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata) are a distinct species of waterfowl native to Central and South America. Unlike mallards and other domesticated duck breeds, Muscovies are quiet, highly intelligent, and form strong bonds with their families and caretakers. Their ability to thrive in various environments has led to their presence in many regions worldwide, yet their reputation has been unfairly maligned.
The Truth About Muscovy Ducks
Unfortunately, Muscovies have become the target of misinformation and misguided control efforts. Some claim they are invasive, a nuisance, or detrimental to native wildlife—but the truth is far more complex. While Muscovies are adaptable, they do not displace native species in the way that true invasive species do. Instead, they peacefully coexist in many ecosystems and provide ecological benefits such as pest control.
A Legacy of Love and Companionship
Unlike their wild counterparts, domesticated Muscovies have been companions to humans for centuries. Their affectionate nature, calm demeanor, and striking appearance make them beloved by those who take the time to understand them. They communicate through soft hisses and tail wags, and they form deep, lasting bonds with their caretakers.
The Sad Reality: Misunderstanding and Mistreatment
Despite their loving nature, Muscovy ducks face unnecessary cruelty and removal efforts, particularly in places where they are seen as an inconvenience. Cities and communities across the U.S. have implemented harsh trapping and eradication measures based on flawed beliefs about their impact. Many are unaware that these ducks have strong family bonds and suffer immensely when separated or harmed.
Why We Should Embrace Muscovy Ducks
Rather than seeing Muscovies as a problem, we should recognize the value they bring. These birds contribute to natural pest control, enrich our communities, and provide endless joy to those who care for them. They ask for nothing but kindness in return, and it is up to us to ensure they receive the respect and protection they deserve.
